The name Budweiser Budvar comes from the Czech city of České Budějovice, called Budweis in German. In 1265, King Ottokar II of Bohemia granted the right to brew beer to the people of České Budějovice. At one time, the city's brewery was a recognized producer for the Holy Roman Empire. The Thirty Years' War devastated breweries in the Czech lands, and by 1802, German-speaking citizens had built a separate brewery. This was followed by the occupation of the Czech lands during World War II and the nationalization of the brewery. Over the past 30 years, Budweiser Budvar has diversified its range of beers, increased its exports, and become one of the most respected traditional beer brands in Europe.
In 2020, the European producer introduced a new global visual identity, inspired by historical labels dating back to the brewery's founding in 1895. The new label features the unmistakable vintage logo, moved to the upper part of the label like a noble coat of arms. The new design also includes a clear reference to Budvar's local ingredients: Saaz hops grown in Žatec, pure natural water from lakes formed in the Ice Age, and grains from a unique variety of barley grown in Moravia.
