Composition.
One tablet contains furazolidone 25 mg and excipients: microcrystalline cellulose. Polyvidone K 30, croscarmellose sodium, talc, magnesium stearate.
Therapeutic indications.
Infectious enteritis, enterocolitis and food poisoning caused by germs sensitive
to furazolidone, bacillary dysentery, lambliasis.
It can be indicated in trichomoniasis, as well as in the treatment of cholera
Dosage and method of administration.
Adults
For the treatment of cholera or other enteral infections: the recommended dose is 100 mg furazolidone, administered orally, 4 times a day, at 6-hour intervals, for 5-7 days.
in the treatment of lambliasis, the recommended dose is 100 mg furazolidone, administered orally, 4 times a day, at 6-hour intervals, for 7-10 days.
Children
For the treatment of cholera or other enteral infections: the recommended dose is 1.25 mg furazolidone/kg, administered orally, 4 times a day, at 6-hour intervals, for 5-7 days.
in the case of infestation with Giardia lamblia the duration of treatment can be extended to 10 days.
It is recommended to crush and dilute the tablets with a little liquid to obtain a suspension, as the tablets are not suitable for administration to children under 6 years of age.
Precautions.
during treatment and 4 days after stopping it, it is not recommended to consume alcoholic beverages (risk of disulfiram-type reactions) and foods containing thiamine (risk of hypertension and other toxic phenomena).
Special warnings.
Pregnancy and lactation
Studies conducted on laboratory animals with doses much higher than the therapeutic doses recommended in humans, administered for a long time, have not shown fetotoxic effects. Since there are no controlled studies in pregnant women, furazolidone is not recommended during pregnancy. Administration in the last trimester of pregnancy is contraindicated due to the risk of hemolytic anemia in the fetus.
It is not known whether furazolidone is excreted in breast milk. Therefore, in women who are breastfeeding, consideration should be given to either discontinuing treatment or discontinuing breastfeeding. Administration to women who are breastfeeding children under 1 month of age is contraindicated due to the risk of hemolytic anemia in the infant.
Ability to drive and use machines
Furazolidone does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
