Composition.
The active substance is dry extract from ivy leaves (Hederae folium). The other components are: potassium sorbate (Ph.Eur.) (preservative), anhydrous citric acid (Ph. Eur.), 70% sorbitol solution (crystallisable) (E420) (Ph.Eur.), xanthan gum, cherry flavour, purified water.
Therapeutic indications.
Prospan syrup is a herbal medicine, which contains dry extract from ivy leaves (Hederae folium) as the active substance. Prospan syrup belongs to a group of medicines called other cough suppressants and expectorants.
Prospan syrup is used for the treatment of (productive) cough in long-term (chronic) inflammatory conditions of the bronchi and for acute inflammations of the respiratory tract accompanied by cough. Prospan syrup is used to treat cough in adults, adolescents and children.
If you do not feel better or feel worse after 7 days, you should consult a doctor.
Dosage and method of administration.
Always use Prospan syrup exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist or nurse has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
For oral administration. The syrup is administered in the morning, at noon and in the evening.
The syrup is administered with the measuring cup attached to the bottle. It is recommended to shake the bottle vigorously before use.
Precautions.
Before using Prospan syrup, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. If symptoms do not improve or if difficulty breathing, fever or expectoration with pus or blood occurs, you should consult a doctor immediately.
Before using Prospan syrup for children under 1 year of age, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Unlike older children, this age group should be closely monitored when Prospan syrup is administered, diarrhoea and vomiting may occur.
Special warnings.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Prospan is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as there is not enough information available on the safety of administration in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Driving and using machines
This medicine has no effect on the ability to drive or use machines.
