Composition.

The active substance is chondroitin polysulfate obtained from bovine tracheal cartilage. 1 g of gel contains 3 mg of chondroitin polysulfate from bovine tracheal cartilage, equivalent to 25000 units (units determined by activated partial thromboplastin time – APTT). The other components are Isopropanol, carbomer (polyacrylic acid), propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, purified water.

Therapeutic indications.

Hirudoid is a medicine that reduces swelling and inflammation. Hirudoid is used for the topical treatment of:

- contusions (traumas) with or without ecchymoses (hematomas)

- superficial phlebitis (vein inflammation) when compression treatment is not possible.

Dosage and administration.

Always use Hirudoid exactly as your doctor has told you. You should discuss with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

The usual dose is: Apply Hirudoid to the affected area 2-3 times a day. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, applying 3-5 cm of gel is generally sufficient.

Method of administration

For cutaneous use. Apply Hirudoid evenly to the affected area and massage gently until absorbed into the skin. Use Hirudoid only on intact skin; avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes. As with other alcohol-containing gels, treated areas should not be covered with bandages. Hirudoid is also suitable for physiotherapeutic procedures such as phonophoresis and iontophoresis. During iontophoresis, Hirudoid should be applied under the cathode.

You should use Hirudoid until symptoms disappear. In the case of contusions, treatment generally lasts up to 10 days. In the case of superficial phlebitis, treatment generally lasts 2-3 weeks.

Precautions.

Do not use Hirudoid

- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to chondroitin polysulfate or any of the other components of Hirudoid. Do not apply Hirudoid to open wounds or damaged skin.

Special warnings.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine. To date, experience with the topical use of chondroitin polysulfate - administered cutaneously to pregnant or breastfeeding women - has not shown any harmful effect on the fetus or infant.

Driving and using machines

No special precautions are necessary.
