Composition.
The active substance is chondroitin polysulphate obtained from bovine tracheal cartilage. 1 g of gel contains chondroitin polysulphate from bovine tracheal cartilage 3 mg, equivalent to 25000 units (units determined by the activated partial thromboplastin time - APTT). The other ingredients are isopropanol, carbomer (polyacrylic acid), propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, purified water.
Therapeutic indications.
Hirudoid is a medicine that reduces swelling and inflammation. Hirudoid is used for the topical treatment of:
- contusions (traumas) with or without ecchymosis (haematomas)
- superficial phlebitis (inflammation of the veins) when compression treatment is not possible.
Dosage and method of administration.
Always use Hirudoid exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The usual dose is: Apply Hirudoid to the affected area 2-3 times a day. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, 3-5 cm of gel is usually sufficient.
Method of administration
For cutaneous use. Apply Hirudoid evenly to the affected area and massage gently until it penetrates the skin. Use Hirudoid only on unbroken skin; avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes. As with other gels containing alcohol, you should not cover the areas treated with Hirudoid with bandages. Hirudoid is also suitable for physiotherapeutic procedures such as phonophoresis and iontophoresis. During iontophoresis, Hirudoid should be applied under the cathode.
You should use Hirudoid until the symptoms disappear. In the case of contusions, treatment usually lasts up to 10 days. In the case of superficial phlebitis, treatment usually lasts 2-3 weeks.
Precautions.
Do not use Hirudoid
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to chondroitin polysulphate or any of the other ingredients of Hirudoid. Do not apply Hirudoid to open wounds or broken skin.
Special warnings.
