Lactose intolerance is one of the most common types of food intolerance. This condition is caused by the inability to digest and absorb lactose and is manifested by digestive discomfort as a result of milk consumption. Lactose is a compound that is absorbed in the intestine after being split by the body's own lactase. When this enzyme is absent, the splitting process cannot take place and, after a while (maximum a few hours) after consuming foods containing lactose, the signs of intolerance appear.
