Hoegaarden is a white beer, made from wheat, with a fine taste, moderately sweet and bitter, and an elegant character, which combines the distinct notes of coriander with the fruity and refreshing aroma of orange (4.9% alc.).
About the producer
Maybe they had too much free time or maybe they got tired of the holy wine. Maybe it was divine inspiration? We will never know for sure. What we do know about the Hoegaarden monks is that they were the first to discover the unique wheat beer recipe around 1445.
Historical sources say that the first wheat beer was incredibly sour. That is until the Hoegaarden monks started experimenting with orange peel and coriander: a divine discovery that led to the famous Hoegaarden recipe.
Today, 9 out of 10 wheat beers sold in Belgium are from Hoegaarden. In the meantime, the unique aroma is appreciated and awarded throughout Europe, North America, Australia, Singapore and China. How its name is pronounced in other parts of the world is another story. But, to clarify for everyone, it is pronounced "WHOgaarden".
