Originating in South America, the border area between Brazil and Paraguay, pineapple was spread in Central and South America and cultivated in the 2nd - 3rd millennium BC by the Aztecs and Mayans. The first European to discover pineapple was Columbus, on November 4, 1493 in Guadeloupe. Later, in 1550, Portuguese navigators spread pineapple to India and from there throughout Southeast Asia.
Pineapple as a symbol of colonialism and the new world - fascinated Europeans for centuries, In the years 1700 - 1800 there was a great concern among gardening enthusiasts for growing pineapple in protected areas, a recent invention at the time. Many varieties of pineapple have been tested for greenhouse cultivation, until the 19th -20th century when pineapple began to be marketed massively, being transported in quantities large enough for prices to become lower in Western Europe.
