Originating in Indonesia, more recently cultivated in Thailand and Malaysia, Salak or Salacca, Zalacca is a species of palm tree (Arecaceae family) whose spectacular fruits rarely reach Europe. The Salacca fruit contains 3-5 lobes with a rather pasty than hard consistency, one of these lobes envelops a small, inedible seed. The dark brown but shiny skin - somewhat similar to snake skin - peels off easily. Inside, the ripe fruit has a pale yellow color and a sweet and sour taste, somewhat similar to that of pineapple, but the texture is rather similar to that of an apple and varies from very dry and crumbly to creamy mixed with crunchy. The fruit is not juicy, which is why it is very easy to peel and eat.
