Composition. The active substances are sodium picosulfate 10.0 mg, light magnesium oxide 3.5 g, anhydrous citric acid 10.97 g per sachet. - The other ingredients are potassium hydrogen carbonate, sodium saccharin, lemon flavour (lemon flavour, maltodextrin, tocopherol)
Therapeutic indications.
Take CitraFleet to clean out your bowel (also called your large intestine and colon) before you have a diagnostic procedure that needs a clean bowel, for example a colonoscopy (a procedure where the inside of your bowel is looked at using a long, flexible instrument that your doctor puts into your bottom) or an X-ray examination.
CitraFleet is a powder that tastes and smells of lemon. It contains two types of laxatives mixed in each sachet which, when dissolved in water and drunk, work by flushing and cleaning out your bowel. It is important to have an empty, clean bowel so that your doctor or surgeon can see it clearly. CitraFleet is for use in adults (including the elderly) aged 18 years and over.
Dosage and method of administration.
Be prepared to have frequent, loose bowel movements at any time after taking a dose of CitraFleet. This is normal and shows that the medicine is working. It may be important to make sure that you have access to a toilet until the effects of the medicine have passed.
It is important to follow a special diet (low in solid foods) on the day before your procedure is planned. Once you start taking the sachets of this medicine you must not eat any solid food until after your procedure is finished. You must always follow the diet that your doctor has told you to follow. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, you must not take more than the recommended dose in any 24 hour period.
You will be given two sachets of CitraFleet. Each sachet contains one adult dose. The treatment can be given in one of two ways:
· one sachet on the evening before your procedure and the second sachet on the morning of your procedure or
· one sachet in the afternoon and the second sachet on the evening before your procedure. This schedule is recommended when your procedure is planned for early morning.
The time between taking the two sachets should be at least 5 hours. Each sachet should be made up into a drink by dissolving the contents in a glass of water.
Do not further dilute the medicine by drinking fluids immediately after taking each sachet.
Wait ten minutes after taking each sachet, then drink approximately 1.5-2 litres of clear fluids at a rate of about 250 ml (a tumblerful) to 400 ml (a large glassful) per hour. Clear soups and/or balanced electrolyte solutions are recommended to avoid dehydration. It is recommended that you do not drink only plain or demineralised water.
After taking the second sachet and drinking 1.5-2 litres of fluid, do not eat or drink anything for at least 2 hours before your procedure or as your doctor has told you.
Precautions.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking CitraFleet if:
- you have recently had surgery on your bowel
- you have kidney or heart problems
- you have an imbalance of water and/or electrolytes (sodium or potassium) or are taking medicines that could affect the balance of water and/or electrolytes (sodium or potassium) in your body, for example diuretics, corticosteroids or lithium
