Papaya fruits, with a shape similar to pears, belong to the berry fruits and are formed from the white flowers of the papaya tree. Papaya fruits are elongated or oval and, depending on the place of origin, can have a length between 15 and 40 centimeters and can reach a weight of 5 kilograms. Depending on the degree of ripeness, the color of the peel varies from green to yellow. The pulp of the fruit can be orange or light red and is very sweet. Unripe fruits are inedible and bitter. Inside the fruit, we can find numerous black, spherical seeds. The whole fruit can be used, except for the peel.
Papaya fruits are sensitive and can spoil easily. It is advisable to store them in a dry place away from sunlight. They are also sensitive to cold. Ripe fruits can be stored in the refrigerator, only at temperatures above 7 degrees. Papaya can also be bought cut into pieces or sliced, then frozen or candied. This way it lasts longer.
