Composition
The active substance is clotrimazole. One gram of cream contains 10 mg clotrimazole. The other components are: octyldodecanol, cetostearyl alcohol, cetyl palmitate, sorbitan stearate, polysorbate 60, benzyl alcohol, purified water.
Therapeutic indications
Clotrimazole, the active substance in Canesten cream, penetrates the affected layers of the skin and attacks fungi. The result is the destruction of fungi and the inhibition of their growth.
Canesten cream is indicated for the treatment of cutaneous and mucosal mycoses caused by dermatophytes, fungi, yeasts and microorganisms such as Malassezia furfur, and skin infections caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum.
These can appear, for example, in the following forms:
- Fungal infections of the foot (athlete's foot), interdigital infections of the hands or feet, periungual infections (paronychia) that occur in association with nail infections;
- Superinfections with pathogenic germs sensitive to clotrimazole;
- Fungal infections of the skin and skin folds, cutaneous candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor, erythrasma), seborrheic dermatitis microbially superinfected with germs sensitive to clotrimazole;
- Labial and genital area infections caused by fungi (candidal vulvitis);
- Inflammation of the glans penis and infections of the skin of the glans penis caused by fungi (candidal balanitis).
Dosage and administration
Always use Canesten exactly as your doctor has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
Canesten cream is for cutaneous administration. Apply the cream 2-3 times a day, in a thin layer, and gently massage until the cream penetrates the skin. Generally, about ½ cm of cream is sufficient for treating an area the size of a palm.
For labial infections (candidal vulvitis) and adjacent areas, candidal balanitis and inflammation of the glans penis, apply the cream to the affected skin area (e.g., from the vagina to the anus), 1-3 times a day.
For foot infections, it is recommended to wash and dry the feet, especially between the toes, before applying the cream.
The duration of treatment varies depending on the severity and location of the infection.
To ensure complete healing, treatment should be continued according to the indications below
- Cutaneous mycoses, including athlete's foot: 3-4 weeks.
- Erythrasma: 2-4 weeks.
- Pityriasis versicolor: 1-3 weeks.
- Candidal vulvitis and balanitis: 1-2 weeks.
